The NDIS (National Insurance Disability Sceme)

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a government program in Australia that helps pchildren and adults living with a disability or permanent cognitive impairment get the support they need to live their best life. It gives funding for people so they can access the services and supports that work for them.

What Types of Disabilities Are Covered?

The NDIS supports people with permanent and significant disabilities. This includes physical, intellectual, sensory, cognitive, neurological, and psychosocial disabilities. If your disability affects how you manage everyday tasks, you may be eligible for the NDIS.

What Are the Types of NDIS Budgets?

There are three different types of support budgets that may be funded to an individual on an NDIS plan including:

1. Core Supports – Everyday help like personal care, transport, help at home, and support in the community.

2. Capacity Building Supports – Supports to help you learn new skills, like managing money, building relationships, or becoming more independent.

3. Capital Supports – Larger, one-off purchases like equipment (e.g., wheelchairs) or home modifications (e.g., ramps).

What Can NDIS Funds Be Used For?

NDIS funding can be used for many things, such as:

Help with showering, dressing, and cooking

Support to go out into the community or join activities

Equipment like mobility aids or communication devices

Therapy (speech, occupational, physiotherapy)

Transport to appointments or programs

Learning life skills like shopping or catching public transport

Help to find and keep housing or a job
